The learner will be able to distinguish between
the digestive system and the digestive tract and identify the organs involved
in the digestive process.
The learner will be able to explain how enzymes
work and identify the specific enzymes used to break down different types
of food in different sections of the digestive tract.
The learner will be able to describe which foods
are best used for sources of energy versus the raw materials for growth,
repair and reproduction.
The learner will be able to compare the normal
operation of the digestive system with such malfunctions as; ulcers,
lactose deficient, and diabetes.
The learner will be able to differentiate between
the process of breathing and cell respiration.
The learner will be able to explain the physical
and chemical relationship between the Respiratory System and the
Circulatory System.
The learner will be able to describe the process
of cellular respiration and distinguish the difference between aerobic and
anaerobic respiration and the amount of energy released in each chemical
pathway.
The learner will be able to analyze the energy needs
of an athlete as related to high intensity versus endurance activities, and
explain the role and affect of ATP depletion, lactic acid build, and the
accumulation of carbonic acid on performance.
The learner will be able to describe homeostasis
and explain what osmotic pressure has to do with the filtration and reabsorption of fluids in the body.
The learner will be able to understand how blood
chemistry is affected by the foods we consume, the by products of
metabolism and the hormones of the endocrine glands.
The learner will be able to explain how a
urinalysis can be used to detect for diabetes and drugs.
The learner will be able to compare and analyze
the role and effectiveness of the Nervous System with the Endocrine System.
The learner will be able to differentiate between
the chemicals released by the neurons with those hormones produced by the
ductless glands.
The learner will be able to appreciate the direct
and indirect affect of drugs on the breathing center; blood chemistry, and
O2/CO2 levels in the body.
The learner will be able to understand how
different systems of the body work together to minimize the affect of
various malfunctions such as, hypoglycemia and thyroid deficiency.
