Introduction to Health

 

The learner will be able to explain what major factors contribute to overall wellness.

The learner will be able to better identify potential fraudulent claims in relationship to health care.

Personality Development/Mental and Emotional Wellness

 

The learner will be able to describe the importance of personality and its development.

The learner will be able to explain what mental wellness is.

The learner will be able to describe some basic emotions and how to deal with them.

The learner will be able to explain the defense mechanisms and relate them to overall wellness.

The learner will be able to explain the stages of grieving.

The learner will be able to summarize common warning signs of depression and suicide.

Stress and Managing It

 

The learner will be able to apply healthy stress-management techniques to their everyday life.

The learner will be able to list the stages of the stress-response.

The learner will be able to list some of the psychosomatic illnesses.

The learner will understand the difference between type A and Type B personalities.

Body Systems Unit – Skeletal System

 

The learner will be able label major bones in the body.

The learner will be able to identify various disease and injuries associated with the bones.

The learner will be able to list the functions of bones.

The learner will be able to identify the types of joints and give examples of where they are located.      

The learner will be able to explain how the bones work with other body systems.

 

Body Systems Unit – Muscular System

 

The learner will be able to label common muscles of the human body.

The leaner will be able to explain common injuries to muscles.

The learner will be able to explain the different types of muscles and where each are located.

The learner will be able to explain how the muscles work with other body systems.

 

Body Systems – Circulatory System

 

The learner will be able to label the chambers of the heart and the main vessels that deliver oxygen to the organs of the body and explain the role that each plays.

The learner will be able to explain the path of blood to and from the heart.

The learner will be able to explain the process by which the blood receives oxygen and helps eliminate carbon dioxide.

The learner will be able to explain what a blood pressure reading is telling them and identify the proper procedure for taking blood pressure.

The learner will be able to identify risk factors and health habits that may lead to heart disease

 

Body Systems – Respiratory System

 

The learner will be able to label and explain the main components of the respiratory system.

The learner will be able to explain how the respiratory works with the circulatory system to deliver oxygen to the body.

The learner will be able to identify and give some possible causes for certain respiratory illnesses.

The learner will be able to explain how smoking affects the respiratory system.

 

Body Systems - Digestive system

 

The learner will be able to label and explain the main components of the digestive system.

The learner will be able to identify common disorders of the digestive system.

The learner will be able to explain how food is broken down and eliminated by the body.

The learner will be abler to list some of the main functions of the liver.

The learner will be able to explain the effects of drinking alcohol on the body, specifically the liver.

 

Body Systems  - The Nervous System

 

The learner will be able to explain the main functions of the nervous system.

The learner will be able to explain the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.

The learner will be able to make the connection between the nervous system and all other body systems.

The learner will be able to explain the main functions of the different lobes of the brain.

The leaner will be able to explain common head injuries and discuss prevention methods.

The learner will be able to identify common spinal column injuries.

 

Body Systems – The Reproductive Systems

 

The learner will be able to label and explain the main components of the reproductive systems.

The learner will be able to understand certain changes as their body matures.

The learner will be able to explain conception.

The learner will be the creation of life from conception to birth.

The learner will be able to explain symptoms of and ways to prevent common disorders and illness associated with the reproductive system.  These include: Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer, Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Cervical Cancer.

 

First Aid & CPR Unit

 

The learner will be able to apply basic first aid in an emergency situation.

Heat and Cold-Related

Wounds  
Sudden Illnesses  
Shock        
Bone/Muscle/Joint    
Choking
Breathing
Cardiac

The learner will be able to identify common symptoms of potential illnesses/diseases.

The learner will be able to demonstrate proper techniques for C.P.R.

The leaner will be able to explain proper techniques of protecting oneself from transmission of pathogens.

The learner will be introduced to general preventative methods for many above the above emergency situations.

 

Tobacco & Alcohol Unit

 

The learner will be able to identify the effects of both on the body and brain.

The learner will be able to identify the effects of abusing both on society.

The learner will be given information on who to contact and where to get help if someone is addicted/abusing either or both.

The learner will be able to explain the legal implications when alcohol is consumed by a minor.

The learner will be able to explain the importance of decision-making and how it can be distorted when one is under the influence.

The learner will be able to make the connection between the body systems and addiction.

The learner will demonstrate strategies for encouraging others to not participate in the abuse of a drug.

 

Psychoactive Drugs & Steroids

 

The learner will be able to explain what is meant by the phrase, ‘abusing a drug.’

The learner will be able to explain how addiction occurs.

The learner will be able to explain the effects of the different drugs on the body systems.

The learner will be able to explain possible legal implications of using/abusing illegal and legal drugs.

The learner will be able to explain the importance of protecting oneself; identify possible

situations in which club drugs may be present (date-rape drugs).

The learner will demonstrate strategies for encouraging others to not participate in the abuse of a drug.

 

Understanding Nutrition

 

The learner will be able to identify the different types of nutrients and their functions in the body.

The leaner will be able to explain the food guide pyramid.

The learner will be able to explain what a healthy diet consists of, especially for special populations.

The learner will demonstrate his/her knowledge in reading and interpreting food labels.

The leaner will be able to explain metabolism and basal metabolism.    

The learner will be able to explain why certain ‘fad’ diets are not healthy for the adolescent/child.

The learner will be able to explain the best way to maintain a healthy weight- exercise and a healthy diet.

The learner will be able to explain how one’s diet can lead to certain diseases, illnesses, and disorders.

 

Infectious Diseases Unit

 

The learner will be able to list and explain the different pathogens.

The learner will be able to explain some preventative methods for protecting oneself from common infectious diseases.

The learner will be informed of common infectious diseases, including Sexually Transmitted Infections.

The leaner will be able to discuss behaviors that can help prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

The leaner will be able to explain the importance of good decision making in relationship to infectious diseases.

The learner will be able to explain treatment for common infectious diseases, if applicable.

The learner will be able to explain the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections, including AIDS, in our society.

The learner will be able to research, using credible sources, an infectious disease that interests him/her.

 

Non-Infectious Disease Unit

 

The learner will be able to explain what a non-infectious disease is.

The learner will be able to research, using credible sources, a non-infectious disease that interests him/her.

The learner will be able to identify possible risk factors for certain non-infectious diseases.

The learner will be able to list common non-infectious diseases.

 

Environmental Health

 

The learner will be able to explain possible implications of one’s choices on the environment.

 

Career Unit

 

The learner will be able to identify and explain a health-related career that interests them.

Setting Goals for the Future

 

The learner will be able to list realistic goals for his/her future.
