 Curriculum

Science - Grade 4

Weather

The learner will be able to develop an appreciation of how weather affects our daily lives through observation of weather patterns and record keeping of components of weather.

The learner will be able to recognize and understand the purpose of the weather related instruments and demonstrate how to use them.

The learner will be able to analyze a series of events and/or simple daily or seasonal cycles and predict the next likely occurrence in the sequence.

Light

The learner will be able to develop and practice observation skills necessary to understand the behaviors of light and how light travels from its source.

The learner will be able to explain and demonstrate how light is bent when it travels from one material to another and how light is refracted.

The learner will be able to explain what happens when light travels through concave and convex lenses and how lenses of different degrees of magnitude are used in instruments.

The learner will be able to demonstrate the colors of light to include how to make white light, and compare and contrast translucent, transparent, and opaque materials.

American Red Cross Basic Aid Training

The learner will be able to demonstrate the Emergency Action Plan, the steps in the primary survey, the rescue breathing technique, the correct first aid sequence, and when and how to make an emergency telephone call.

The learner will be able to demonstrate the precautions used to prevent choking, and first aid procedures for choking.

The learner will be able to identify the safety precautions to prevent injuries and demonstrate correct first aid and rescue in the case of small wounds, severe wounds, nosebleeds, animal bites, bruises, fractures, and electric shock.

The learner will be able to identify the importance of controlling airflow to fire, ways to prevent fires and burns, first aid for burns, and how to develop a fire escape plan for their home.

The learner will be able to identify common household poisons, safety precautions to prevent poisoning, and first aid procedures for poisoning.

Simple Machines

The learner will be able to identify, illustrate, and explain the six simple machines: levers, pulleys, wheels, gears, incline planes, wedges, and screws. Recognize the individual simple machines in a compound machine.

The learner will be able to explain how friction affects the efficiency of machines and the force needed to move objects. Describe and demonstrate how machines can make work easier.

The learner will be able to demonstrate how inclined planes can be made into the wedge and the screw.

The learner will be able to explain and demonstrate how force is measured, how force is related to work, and what happens when force is applied to an object.

Earth History

The learner will be able to identify and describe the three layers of the earth in detail.

The learner will be able to list the three plate movements, the affect of each movement, and the theory of plate tectonics.

The learner will be able to describe the characteristics of the four types of mountains.

The learner will be able to identify the difference between the two types of weathering (chemical and physical) and erosion.

The learner will be able to describe ways that glaciers change the crust of the earth.
