Language Arts - Grade 1

 

Phonics/Word Study

 

The learner will be able to identify upper case and lower case letters in and out of order

 

The learner will identify and apply beginning, middle, and ending sounds

 

The learner will identify and apply long and short vowel sounds

 

The learner will identify and apply vowel patterns

 

The learner will be able to alphabetize to the first letter

 

The learner will demonstrate phonological awareness

 

The learner will read and write 30 No Excuse Words

 

The learner will recognize 100 additional sight words

 

The learner will use knowledge of letter-sound correspondence

Reading

 

The learner will understand and apply basic concepts of print

 

The learner will use appropriate strategies to recognize unknown words when reading

 

The learner will begin to recognize miscues that interfere with meaning and use self-correcting strategies

The learner will be able to apply context cues to comprehend a story

Language Use and Conventions

 

The learner will attempt to write left to right/ top to bottom

 

The learner will attempt to write with appropriate spaces between letters and words

 

The learner will attempt to use a simple sentence structure with simple subject- verb agreement

 

The learner will attempt to use capital letters correctly (beginning of sentence, I, proper nouns)

 

The learner will attempt to use ending punctuation correctly (period, question mark, exclamation mark)

 

The learner will attempt to spell high frequency words correctly

 

The learner will use phonetic and/or developmental spelling to spell unfamiliar words

Writing Process

 

The learner will be able to understand that a prompt (or picture) and a composition should be clearly connected

 

 

The learner will be able to compose three or more sentences that relate to the same topic

 

The learner will organize the writing to show a beginning, middle, and end

 

The learner will sustain one idea throughout a writing piece

 

The learner will attempt to use details to enhance the writing and go beyond simple sentences

 

The learner will be able to use a series of illustrations and simple sentences to create a focused story

 

The learner will experiment with different forms of writing (poetry, non-fiction, fiction, personal narratives, directions, and letter writing)
